In a Cabin, Winter of 1886

The blizzard has stopped, the clouds floating finally away.
The Moon crowns the pines and bathes the snow-laden
terrain in a milky golden glow. Dark shadows
bleed from inside the house, through the ice glass,
as the players dance across the lamp. Grandfather's
fiddle and the tick of mother's thimble cover
the quiet crunching of cat chewing mice bones.
Clinking china joins the chorus as father
cleans the wonderful stone bowl void
of soup. Through the windowpane, the frigid wind rises
in its blue solo from the cold, black sea
and white is upon us again.
